Steve Derricott, owner of Gfeller Casemakers, Inc., is our USA manufacturer of the ASTRIDE. Without his superior craftsmanship and design skills, the ASTRIDE would likely never have developed into such an attractive and functional piece of training equipment.
Raised in a ranching family in southeast Idaho, Steve learned the art of leatherwork from his father, and now has over thirty years of leatherwork experience. A former geologist himself, Steve is now a casemaker for geologists and also provides leatherwork for West Point Military Academy. Steve has recently developed and patented the Lace Maker, an innovative machine for cutting and beveling leather and rawhide for use in leather braid work.

Wilker's Horse Products

The Wilker's family have been making custom horse products since 1973. We are proud to be able to include their high quality pad made exclusively for us available with the ASTRIDE. Made in the United States with a durable, synthetic fleece, this quilted pad offers added comfort for your horse. Wilker's has designed custom pads for the New Bolton Center in Chester County, Pennsylvania, a world renowned treatment center for horses.

The story behind the ASTRIDE

The idea of adding weight to a horse without a rider is not a new one. The concept for a training aid that enabled such a possibility was born from neccessity. One of my favorite horses, a talented Trakhener dressage/jumper prospect, contracted EPM, and suffered serious back muscle atrophy as a result. While attempting to rehabilitate him after treatment, I wished for a way to reintroduce weight slowly and safely. Having a background in design, and many years involved with horses, I set out to develop a product that would allow for the safe re-introduction of weight.

Through support and encouragement from friends, horse people and gifted craftsmen, the Astride was created. To see it become a valuable training and rehabilitation aid for horses has been an undeniably rewarding experience.
